Xanax (alprazolam) is a drug classified as benzodiazepine that can be used for treating anxiety and depression in patients older than 18 after consulting a qualified health care professional. You may be started on a lower dose of Xanax but it may be increased later. Make sure you do not take more based on your own judgment. An increase should be gradual and occur every 3-4 days. Taking more of Xanax may cause an overdose. An overdose of Xanax can be lethal and will need to be reported to your health care provider right away. The following symptoms may indicate an overdose of this medicine: problems with coordination, coma, drowsiness, and confusion. If you need to discontinue the treatment – talk to your doctor first, as otherwise you may get some withdrawal symptoms. The following ones are sometimes reported: blurred vision, diarrhea, loss of appetite, seizures, trouble concentrating, muscle twitching, and tingling. Do not take Xanax if you are allergic to any other benzodiazepines – to learn whether your drug is a benzodiazepine or not you can always read the label or call your pharmacist. Mild side effects of Xanax are possible and include dizziness, light-headedness, tiredness, increased salivation, changes in appetite, dry mouth, changes in sex drive or ability, weight changes, irritability, and drowsiness.
